The process from application to job offer averages 4-6 weeks
Long distance applicants will be tested in one - two days. Advise our hiring team that you are long distance, and they will schedule your testing to make your trip as convenient as possible.
Physical Assessment
Non-lateral applicants are expected to meet the following physical requirements. We will allow new employees to work out on duty, and they will be physically tested monthly; recruits are required to pass the requirements on the first day of academy training.
The PT test consists of three activities:
1. One Minute Sit-Up Test: The score is calculated by the number of bent leg sit-ups performed in 1 minute.
2. One Minute Push-Up Test: The score is calculated by the number of push-ups performed in 1 minute.
3. 1.5-mile run: This is a timed run.
For more details on the fitness standards, go to: https://www.wleacademy.com/fitness-standards
Lateral applicants are not required to take the physical assessment.
Oral Board
For applicants who successfully complete the written exam and PT assessment, oral boards will be scheduled at the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office that afternoon.
Background Investigation
Once you pass the oral board, LCSO Hiring Unit will send you an email invitation to start your background investigation using a program called, "Guardian". You have 30 days to complete the questionnaire and supply the required documents, such as; education transcripts, military discharge form, credit report, and other forms as requested. The faster you complete the questionnaire, the faster you background investigation will be completed.
Fingerprints and Drug Screen
LCSO will fingerprint all applicants and require a drug screen.
Pre-Employment Polygraph Examination
The examination is used to verify information provided during the background investigation. This is the easiest test you will ever take - just tell the truth. We are looking for people with life experience and have learned from previous mistakes.
Medical Examination
A medical exam will confirm your ability to perform the duties of a deputy. The medical examiner will have candidates complete the physical assessment to ensure the candidate can achieve the physical fitness requirement by the academy start date.
Psychological Examination
LCSO uses Smith Psychological Services to determine the suitability of the candidate for the position.
Sheriff's Interview
The final step in the process is to meet the boss, Sheriff Kozak.
Certifications
Sheriff Deputies are required to attend the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy, at the department's expense, for the WLEA basic course for officer certification within one year of being hired. This course is 8 weeks long for detention and 12 weeks for patrol. Persons currently certified, either in Wyoming or other states, may not need to attend all the basic academy courses. This depends on the length and type of academy attended, dates of law enforcement employment and other factors. However, Wyoming Peace Officer's Standards and Training (POST) will require certified out-of-state applicants to pass a challenge exam and/or other requirements to achieve Wyoming Certification, as well as attendance at specified courses at a minimum.
The Laramie County Sheriffs' Office has no requirement or obligation to hire any individual. Disqualification for employment consideration may occur at any phase of the hiring process. Laramie County is a drug-free and equal opportunity employer.
