Election Countdown: Primary Election Candidate Filing Period Starts May 16th and ends May 31st.

Candidate Filling Signals End of Voters’ Ability to Change Political Party Ahead of August Primary Election

LARAMIE COUNTY, WY- The 2024 election season officially kicks off at 8 a.m., Thursday, May 16, with the start of candidate filing for the Aug. 20 Primary election.  The Laramie County Clerk’s office will accept applications for county commissioner, assessor, and political party precinct committee members through Friday, May 31 at 5 p.m

Applications are available on the Laramie County Clerk’s election page at https://www.laramiecountywy.gov/County-Government/Elected-Officials/County-Clerk/Elections/Campaign-Corner  or may be picked up at the election office in the Laramie County Governmental Complex, 309 W 20th St., Ste 1500.   Applications may be filed in person, by mail, by email to election@laramiecountywy.gov , or via fax (307) 633-4240.  Applicants for county offices are required to pay a $100 filing fee.

County Clerk Debra Lee noted candidates for federal and state offices file with the Secretary of State, while those running for municipal offices in Cheyenne or Pine Bluffs file with the respective city clerk.

The start of candidate filing also signals the end of voters’ ability to change their political party before the Primary election.  Lee reminds registered voters that May 15 is the last chance to change party affiliation ahead of the August Primary.  A state law enacted last year prohibits registrants from changing parties from May 16, the start of candidate filing, through Primary Election Day, Aug. 20.  Registrants can change party affiliation at the county clerk’s election office or with the town clerk in Albin or Burns.

For more information on candidate filing, voter registration or changing party affiliation, call the election office at 633-4242 or visit the Clerk’s election page at laramiecountywy.gov/ .  Laramie County candidate rosters will be updated by 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the filing period.
